Rocktober 10, 2022 - weekly update

Hey internet friend, welcome back to this weekly update post. As always, Black Lives Matter! Also, if you want to just see the dog picture, click here. This weeks post will be pretty short, so let's dive right in.

I've been spending a bunch of time playing RuneScape 3 lately and I think I figured out why. One of my all-time favorite video games is Ultima Online (herein referred to as UO). While there are some free servers still running, and EA still has servers running a really warped version of the game online today, for the most part UO is a game in decline. However, of the many things I loved about that game, one of my favorites was that you could do whatever you wanted. It was one of the first open-world kind of sandbox MMORPGs. If you felt like making money, you could go crafting. Feeling like you want some adventure? You could go and fight monsters. Looking to hunt the "most dangerous game"? Player killing was an option (although it did not come without consequence). RuneScape 3 has all these elements, but instead of needing multiple characters because your skills are capped at 700 (and each skill could go as high as 100) - your character in RS3 can train all 28 skills from 1-99 (and most, if not all, to 120). RuneScape 3 even lets you build your own house (which is something that you could do in UO, although you had to buy the deed and find the room to place it).

While I've watched a handful YouTube videos, (and mostly about raising particular skills) for the most part I've been trying to just play the game and think about it for myself. So far my highest skill is crafting. I had a feeling that it would be useful for everything else that I wanted to do, so I invested some of the money that I'd made playing and crafting to buy uncut gems (anyone who is on TikTok or chronically-online might have heard that in a specific way) to cut and sell in the Grand Exchange. With crafting I can make stuff to help train other skills faster, as well as making magic-user armor. My mining and smithing are in the 40s, but since I am not using a melee weapon, it hasn't really come up yet. My magic and defense are in the 50s, but I recently started also training ranged weapons as well. I raised my fletching (which is what you use to make bows) and I've been able to keep myself supplied with bows and arroows. Since I have smithing high enough, I've also been able to make pretty strong arrows (you need to smith the tips for the arrows, and the stronger ore you use, the more damage the arrow). I started woodcutting early as a money maker, and with that in the 40s I should be good for a while on shafts/arrows - although soon I will have to start training again to make better bows. I have about a thousand feathers in the bank from raising the ranged skill from around 5-20 by killing chickens in one of the starter towns, so I am in good shape!

Overall RS3 is a really fun game, but it would be more enjoyable if I had people to play with. I've thought about doing that thing where you just go on the Internet and say the wrong thing and wait for people to correct you, but I am trying to think of something a bit more savy before going that route.

So my weekend was really laid back. Hung out with the kid, played Farkle, Fortnite, and a bunch of RS3. Also went to the doctor to see about getting a sleep study, because it has been a really long time since I got a good night sleep. Last night was bad, and I know because Bark Twain was sleeping on me the entire night.

Well, Bruiser just walked into my office and started whining at me and standing on my foot. I think he wants to go for walkies, and I had better take him and his brother. Note/upate - I came back and edited this after we went for a walk and played fetch. Now Bruiser is lying under the desk very happy!

Thanks for reading, internet friend. I hope you have a very nice day and a great week. Cheers!

I like this close-up picture of Bark Twain.
